Good bye Judy!!
Over the years I have started many a memo with "life is
ever changing"...So here I go again! After 24 years, Bud and I decided
to sell Flyaways Gymnastics-a huge change in our lives. Building
Flyaways into a successful business has been such a joy-a lot of hard
work and a bit of stress, but so much joy. I want to thank all of
the parents and gymnasts that I have had the privilege of working with
over the years...thousands of wonderful children that have grown into
wonderful adults. Kids are the greatest , so "trainable" if give the
right environment and love. It has been the mission of Flyaways to be a
safe environment that nurtures children while training athletes. The
staff at Flyaways has done that very successfully and I am so proud to
have been apart of that.
In the process of moving out of my office, I ran across
our first brochure (1982) our hand-written class lists and our very
first deposit slip ($3,607)..lots of memories and a reminder of how far
we have come. I also ran across the agenda for our fall staff meeting in
2002 (I tend to hand on to a lot of stuff). My goals for that year
for Flyaways were to have "700 students, a motivated staff that I can
sit back and enjoy, and happy customers that love what we do for both
child and parent because they know we care". As I read it I just had to
smile. Number of students is only important if we are doing a great job.
The staff at Flyaways is about the same as it was in 2002 and it is a
stellar staff that I could sit back and enjoy. They are the ones who
make Flyaways Gymnastics a successful, happy place to be. This is the
best staff we've ever had, and I will dearly miss them all. You are very
fortunate that your children have the opportunity to train with some of
the most carling "teachers" around! (cont) |
Meet the new
owners of Flyaways - the Hegquist Family
The Hegquist family has a strong background in the
sport of gymnastics. as well as Flyaways. Mark and Debbie met at Cooper
High School, where they shared their passion for gymnastics. Debbie went
on to compete at Bemidji State University, earning a spot in Bemidji's
Hall of Fame, while Mark helped coach and spot. Post-graduation, they
married and moved to Cambridge, where Debbie took over the High School
team and developed a strong community education program there.
Down the road, their daughters, Brittany and Bree
both competed in gymnastics for Flyaways. They even had Judy for a
coach! Bree was most active in the High School program and Brittany
competed through level 8 at Flyaways. In 1998, the Hegquists' began Rum
River Gold Gymnastics, where the whole family contribute in coaching and
Brittany competed through level 10.
Today, Mark has been with Flyaways again for the
past three year. Debbie is continuing to run Rum River Gold Gymnastics
in Cambridge, and coach for Flyaways as much as possible. Bree is an
Emergency Room RN at North Memorial and Brittany is a student at the
Carlson School of Management. You will most likely be seeing her in the
office, and coaching whenever she can.
Owing a gymnastics club has been the Hegquist
dream. We are extremely excited to meet current and new faces!
Gymnastics is our passion, and we look forward to sharing it with you. |

(cont-Judy) Needless to say, the future of
Flyaways is hugely important to me. My criteria fro new leadership was
simple...he/she simple needs to have the same philosophy, passion and
compassion for the sport of gymnastics and for children. Mark and
Debbie Hegquist have that. They have been part of Flyaways in one way or
another for many, many years and I know that they will put their heart
and soul into it. I wish them all the best.
Who knows what my future holds. Retired, unemployed, and
fixed income have been some "old" sounding terms running through my
head! I have promised myself that I will do nothing for the next 6
months except enjoys Isaiah's last year in high school and spend more
time with my husband, girls and 3 grandchildren. I will continue to own
Flyaways North in Pine City and will try not to get in the way of the
great job Miss Kim, Jo and Jessica, etc have been doing there! However,
I am starting to compile a list of goals....
May your lives be filled with many blessings...Judy
